Volkswagen is brainstorming an innovative new way to travel. Our prototype will forge a shift, causing people everywhere to rethink what it means to drive and alter the course of mobility in the coming decade and into the future.
GEN.TRAVEL, our first all-electric fully autonomous (Level 5) vehicle prototype, made its world debut this year. The mix between a sedan and multipurpose vehicle introduces a completely new vehicle category in our premium portfolio, and turns the driver into a relaxed passenger. The study creates a new freedom on the road, with the driver able to work, relax, entertain, visit with family and more while 'behind the wheel'.
"The GEN.TRAVEL offers us a glimpse of the travel of the future. It shows us what autonomous driving will look like in the future [and] embodies the visionary design of beyond tomorrow for the mobility of tomorrow," Klaus Zyciora, Head of Volkswagen Group Design explained.
The exterior of the GEN.TRAVEL is futuristic, divided into two contrasting parts. First, a transparent, glass cabin which perfectly incorporates into a lower section which houses all the technical features of the prototype. An overnight-setup allows the two seats to retreat into two beds that can be folded out to a full-flat position. The edge of the window sits approximately at waist level, maximize the view of the outside. However, the increased visibility does not impact passengers who choose to lay down flat in the car, as they are designed in a way to not allow external influences to disturb those inside.
"Efficient shaping characterizes the extremely distinctive design. Thus, in an age of technical perfection and virtually unlimited possibilities, 'form follows function' becomes 'form follows freedom'. The automobile will not only be better, but also more exciting than ever before," Klaus continued.
The GEN.TRAVEL's lighting system is also carefully crafted with consideration for the passengers within, as it influences melatonin production to help passengers fall asleep and wake up naturally. For family trips, the front seats can be configured to entertain the children using augmented reality (AR). All interface elements of the vehicle are produced using sustainable materials, combined with recycled or natural materials. Entering and exiting the vehicle is made easy by smooth, wing doors.
The GEN.TRAVEL has a unique, modular and light interior concept that can be customized for each journey with up to four people able to be transported. For business trips, the conference setup with comfortable seats and a large, centered table provides relaxed surroundings. Dynamic lighting creates a pleasant working environment and prevents passengers from experiencing motion sickness, a very important consideration when blending travel and work.
Whether you're on the road for work or pleasure, the GEN.TRAVEL aims to reinvent the way you drive. Although only a prototype, Volkswagen continues to expand our electric vehicle fleet and push forward into the innovative future.
